With golf courses beginning to re-open from today, clubs are looking for ways to ensure their members are kept safe. We talked to Larry Higgins, director of LA engineering in Co. Kildare, who designed and manufactured Birdie Golf Lifts.
What is Birdie Golf Lifts?
Birdie Golf Lifts is a new product designed to get golfers back playing safely by ensuring they have zero contact with the flag. The idea is simple (sinking the putt may not be!!). Once you hole your putt, you use your putter to lift the handle up and your ball then rolls onto the green where you can retrieve it safely with no contact of the flag, cup or Birdie Golf Lift. It is also an excellent solution for anyone with back problems.
How did you come up with the idea?
I have played golf all my life in Clane golf club. They had a concern for when golf returns that members would still have to touch the flag stick and approached me to see if there was anything I could design to prevent this from happening and protect the members from potentially spreading/ contracting the disease while on the golf course.
Was is easy to design and manufacture?
I have worked as an engineer for over 20 years and found designing the Birdie Golf Lift easy. The day after I received the call I had a prototype done up. Clane and Millicient golf club got talking and both trialled the prototype which they found worked very well.
The product is made with stainless steel which is non-corrosive and is weather resistant for all types of weather and temperatures. It will with-stand the soaring temperatures in Spain to the frosty lows in Ireland and can be used all year round.
We have added rubber to the lever so that the metal won’t damage/ scratch the putter surface. This was an important piece of feedback that we received from the clubs who trialled it and we made sure to implement it in the final design.
Have you received much interest so far?
Yes we have had great feedback from the initial videos we put up of the Birdie Golf Lift in action in Millicent. The post received thousands of views and we have received interest from clubs in Ireland, the USA, UK, Spain and even Abu Dhabi. It has all happened so quickly and we’re looking forward to working with these clubs.
Is it easy to install?
Yes. It only takes seconds to install over the flag stick and once it is in place, there is no maintenance needed. It fits all standard ½ inch flag poles and will fit those with a max diameter of 5/8 inch.
What is the advantage of using the Birdie Golf Lift?
Not only does it promote safe golf by not having to touch the flag, but there is no more having to bend down to get your ball which is a bonus for anyone who suffers with back pain. It also complies with R&A guidelines.
Why are you given a percentage of every product sold to charity?
My son Liam use to do a lot of charity work when he lived at home in Ireland and we wanted to give back during this pandemic. Alone do great work with older people to ensure they are happy and secure at home. They provide a point of contact for older people to access health, social care and housing and lots of other services to improve physical and mental wellbeing and we thought this would be a great way to help support them.Liam contacted a friend of his who works with and every month we will be donating a percentage of the sales to them.
